Minimum Wage Goes Up!

Minimum wage may go up if Bush doesn't screw it up for the hard working lower class society. Today the House passed a bill 315-116 in favor of increasing minimum wage from the low $5.15 which was set in 1997 to $7.25 an hour over the next 26 months. Considering more than 80 Republicans voted in favor of this bill in the House maybe the Senate with be as partisan as the House. Difficulty may arise however if the bill passes the Senate and gets sent to the Oval Office. By now Bush has most likely pulled out his Crayola crayons and is ready to veto anything proposed by a Democratic controlled congress.

The White House issued a statement saying it opposed the bill because it "fails to provide relief to small businesses." This statement may be true, however, that’s why small businesses have several tax breaks. How much more do they need? It's time to start thinking about the hard working Americans who deserve decent pay for the work that they do. The way I see it are people more beneficial to our society working for a living or staying on welfare because they can't make enough money?

Minimum wage should have been increased years ago, but with a Republican controlled congress and Bush in the White House for the past six years nothing has be done. By using the Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation calculator, $5.15 in 1997 is equivalent to $6.47 in 2006. So for the sake of those in poverty at least bring minimum wage up to par. Some people were making more money 10 years ago then they are today, yet the price of living has gone up. Does this make for a better America?
